Chris Phillips was born in Salt Lake City and currently lives and work in Portland, Oregon. His father was an architect and Chris was always fascinated by his work and the tools that he used. He was encouraged by his parents to draw, so he filled notebooks with morbid monsters.

“This recent batch of work is a meditation on "The Grammar of Ornament" by Owen Jones, architectural drafting, and Islamic tile patterns, which seem to me a contemplation of symmetry and spiritual perfection in nature. I am a huge fan of the pulp fantasy illustration of Hannes Bok, Lee Browne Coye, Virgil Finlay, and others. From the first time I saw them I wanted to imitate their technique. While inspired by their work, I plan to continue developing my own style of illustration.”
